September 21, 2002 -- Artist / painter Kim Weiland was awarded
“THE MARITIME GALLERY YACHTING AWARD, for his watercolor THE CHASE
TO THE MARK.
The award was bestowed at the 23RD ANNUAL MARINE ART EXHIBITION at the
MARITIME GALLERY AT MYSTIC SEAPORT, MYSTIC CONNETICUT.
Weiland’s painting was chosen from the works of over 125 artists
from 13 countries as the painting that best captured the beauty and excitement
of sailboat racing, “the sport of kings”. This honor was awarded
by a panel of three judges: Marie Kotsonis, Vice President of the Maritime
Department at Christies in New York., Sydney H. Rogers, former publisher
of BOATING magazine and an renowned ocean racer, who has competed in the
ADMIRAL’S CUP, THE FASTNET and the SOUTHERN OCEAN RACING CIRCUIT
and Peter Stanford, President Emeritus of the National Marine Historical
Society and founding president of South Street Seaport.
Weiland is a signature member of the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MARINE ARTIST.
